Fruit Fly Brain Connectome Utilized for Stock Trading and Gaming

Researchers have mapped the complete central nervous system connectome of both male and female fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) for comparative analysis. While sexual dimorphism influences mating behavior, the overall connectome structure remains largely consistent.

The availability of this detailed connectome, comprising approximately 160,000 neurons, has spurred creative applications beyond understanding fruit fly biology.

One project, Stonkfly, has repurposed the connectome to function as a cryptocurrency stock trader, leveraging its reward circuits for potentially profitable trades. The effectiveness of this system is still under verification.

Additionally, efforts have been made to control video games like DOOM and Beat Saber using the fruit fly connectome. This involves mapping game frame stimuli to neural outputs and incorporating dopamine-based reward circuits for reinforcement learning.

Although the fruit fly brain is significantly smaller than the human brain, these experiments offer insights into the potential of artificial intelligence research by demonstrating how a relatively small neural network can be adapted for complex tasks.
