FLEX and Sentinel-3C encapsulated for Vega-C launch

Preparations for the launch of Earth-observation satellites FLEX and Copernicus Sentinel-3C aboard a Vega-C rocket are nearing completion at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. The two satellites have been enclosed within the rocket's fairing, with liftoff scheduled for September 15.

Following over six weeks of preparations, the encapsulation of FLEX and Sentinel-3C within the Vega-C fairing marks a significant milestone. FLEX was placed in the lower part of the Vespa secondary payload adapter, and Sentinel-3C was mated to the upper part, allowing Sentinel-3C to be deployed first. The fairing will shield the satellites from the harsh conditions during launch.

FLEX, ESA's Fluorescence Explorer, will measure the faint fluorescence emitted by plants during photosynthesis, providing insights into vegetation health and stress on a global scale. It aims to produce maps of vegetation fluorescence at a 300x300-meter resolution to study plant-atmosphere interactions and ecosystem dynamics.

Copernicus Sentinel-3C, the third satellite in its series, will continue systematic monitoring of Earth's oceans, land, ice, and atmosphere. Its instruments will measure sea-surface temperature, ocean color, sea level, and ice characteristics, supporting the Copernicus Services and the understanding of Earth dynamics.

The next step involves hoisting the encapsulated fairing onto the Vega-C rocket at the launch pad. The Vega-C rocket, capable of launching 2300 kg, utilizes a multi-stage system for precise satellite placement. ESA leads the Vega-C program, with Avio as the prime contractor and launch service operator.
