South Korean artist Taehyong Maria Jeon creates surreal digital illustrations of plants, drawing inspiration from specimens in her apartment. Her work reimagines plant forms with unique colors and patterns.

Jeon approaches plant illustration from an unconventional perspective, using rules to foster experimentation with shape. While trained as a printmaker, she employs digital methods to build layered compositions, starting with basic plant elements and moving into surreal designs.

Her imagined plant life features vibrant and unusual elements such as purple veins, red outlines, and star-like patterns, contributing to their uncanny appearance.

The "Plant Series" began as a challenge to fill a square canvas with plants, focusing on composition and shape. The series evolves with shifting nuances but maintains a core emphasis on balance, color, and form.

Jeon hopes her work also conveys positive energy. Dozens of these illustrations are featured in her first monograph, "Folium," published by Volume, which operates on a crowdfunding model.
