SiPearl delivers first European CPU samples for Jupiter supercomputer

French chip designer SiPearl has delivered the first samples of its Rhea1 CPU for the Jupiter supercomputer. This marks a significant step in the integration of European hardware into the system.

The delivered Rhea1 processors will be integrated by hardware vendor Bull into the Jupiter data center, as part of Bull's BullSequana XH3000 platform. Although the system primarily uses American hardware, it will now be partly powered by these European CPUs.

SiPearl collaborates with British architecture maker Arm for the CPU cores. The Rhea1 CPUs are based on the Arm Neoverse V1 architecture and each feature 80 Neoverse V1 cores, with support for 256-bit vector extensions and access to four HBM modules and four DDR5 interfaces.

The introduction of the Rhea1 CPUs experienced delays; they were originally planned for 2022. The chips are produced by TSMC using a 6nm process.

SiPearl is a French chip design company that has been collaborating with Arm on chips for exascale computing since 2020. The company is part of the European Processor Initiative, which aims to reduce Europe's dependence on non-European chipmakers.
