EU Imposes Restrictions on Children's Social Media Accounts

The European Commission plans new rules for children's social media accounts, focusing on age verification and parental supervision, rather than a strict age limit.

Children aged 15 and older may create accounts themselves. Younger children, up to 15 years old, require parental consent. Accounts of children under 13 years old are fully under the control of parents or guardians, with strict safety standards for platforms.

Children aged 13 and 14 will receive 'introductory accounts' with limited contact with strangers and limited usage time, also under parental supervision.

The rules also apply to video platforms and AI chatbots, which must verify user age.

The proposal, the EU KIDS Act, will be presented on Thursday. The plans may still change and require approval from Parliament and member states.

Instead of a strict age limit, the Commission proposes a system where parents can decide whether their children get access earlier.
