Rubber Chemicals Found in Swiss Milk, Dairy Equipment a Potential Source
Researchers at EPFL and the Swiss Federal Office of Food Safety have detected rubber-related chemicals in Swiss raw milk, with dairy equipment identified as a potential source of contamination.

An estimated six million tons of rubber particles are released annually from tire and road wear, eventually reaching agricultural land. Dairy farms near roads may be exposed, potentially leading to these chemicals entering milk and human consumption.
A study analyzed milk from 17 Swiss farms, finding four rubber-related chemicals in raw milk, with one compound present in seven samples. Alpine farms, distant from roads, showed no detected compounds, though the sample size was too small for definitive conclusions.
Dairy equipment, including hoses and seals, was also analyzed, revealing 14 rubber-related chemicals. Some of these compounds are from materials legally authorized for food contact.
The study, published in Food Chemistry X, noted generally low concentrations but highlighted the need to understand the pathways and assess potential public health risks.
Additives in rubber components of dairy equipment can migrate into milk over time. Researchers found 6PPD-quinone, known to be harmful to fish, in aged rubber materials.
