Delhi Slashes Electricity Losses Through Systemic Overhaul

Globally, significant amounts of electricity are lost due to technical issues and theft, impacting supply, environmental goals, and costs. Delhi, however, has achieved a dramatic reduction in these losses.

Over half of countries tracking electricity losses reported losing at least 10 percent in 2023, with 24 nations exceeding 20 percent. Reducing these losses is crucial for meeting rising demand, conserving energy, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. High losses also increase costs for power providers and consumers.

Fixing electricity grids requires a comprehensive, multi-sector approach, involving equipment upgrades, government coordination, regulatory reform, investment, and cultural change. No single technology can solve the problem.

Over 25 years, Delhi reduced its electricity losses from approximately 50 percent to 5 percent. This achievement is detailed in a new account by electrical engineer Mini Shaji Thomas, offering an insider's perspective.

Other regions have also seen success, with Georgia lowering losses from over 16 percent to about 8 percent and Singapore from 6.6 percent to 0.2 percent in the same period.

Conversely, some areas struggle with persistent or worsening losses. Jamaica has seen losses between 21-28 percent for years due to rampant power theft. Argentina's losses nearly doubled from 12 percent to 24 percent between 2015 and 2023.

In regions like Argentina, a lack of capital for network maintenance and upgrades, coupled with delayed smart meter installation, exacerbates theft and equipment stress.

Thomas suggests Delhi's experience can serve as a model for other regions, emphasizing that replicating these changes necessitates a unified effort from customers, utilities, and government.
