Coyote Tooth Dentures on Display at Eastern California Museum
The Eastern California Museum in Independence, California, showcases a unique set of dentures crafted by a local resident over a century ago.

In the early 20th century, George Washington Hancock of Independence, California, lacking funds for professional dentures, created his own using melted toothbrush handles and teeth from local coyotes. He wore these prosthetic teeth for years.
In 1946, dentist Dr. Douglas Dyer learned of Hancock's dentures and traded a professional set for the unique dental prosthetics. After Dr. Dyer's death, his widow donated them to the Eastern California Museum.
The museum, located near Highway 395 against the Eastern Sierras, also features historical buildings, mining equipment, a steam locomotive, and a native plants walk.
Inside, the museum displays Paiute and Timbisha basketry, artifacts, historical photographs, and items belonging to Japanese Americans interned at the nearby Manzanar concentration camp (1942-1945).
Notable items include the original pitcher's plate from the Manzanar baseball field, a working 1896 Regina Music Box, and Edward S. Curtis photographs.
