Oxford Street Pedestrianisation Plans Revealed
Architecture studio East has released updated images of its plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street, a major London shopping destination. The first phase of the transformation will see a one-kilometre stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street closed to traffic starting October 26.

The initial phase, a temporary measure, aims to gather feedback on public use of the space to inform permanent designs. Renders depict wide, tree-lined streets with ample seating and tables. This section is expected to feature new seating, public spaces, and trees by spring 2027.
The wider Oxford Street transformation, from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road, is being led by Hawkins/Brown and other design firms. This comprehensive project, due for completion by spring 2027, includes over 50 trees, two public squares, and improved amenities.
The Oxford Street Development Corporation emphasizes that the initial works are a test phase to learn from user experiences and collaborate with communities and businesses for an inclusive design.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan stated that the pedestrianisation will create a world-class space for retail, work, and cultural events, aiming to boost regeneration, jobs, and economic growth in London.
These plans follow Mayor Khan's previous announcements and are being expedited after earlier proposals were blocked by Westminster Council.
