Menopause Appears to Pause Brain Changes, Study Finds

While major hormonal shifts during puberty and pregnancy cause permanent changes in brain gray matter volume, menopause seems to temporarily halt these alterations, according to new research.

A study analyzing over 1,000 female brain scans revealed that gray matter volume decreased at menarche (first menstruation) and during pregnancy, changes distinct from age-related decline. However, no such changes were observed during menopause.

Researchers examined MRI data from adolescent and adult women, comparing brains before and after menarche, pregnancy, and menopause against hormonally stable controls. They found expected gray matter reductions in the cortex associated with puberty and pregnancy.
