DIY Algae Biodiesel Proves Difficult
An independent maker attempted to produce biodiesel from algae, but encountered significant challenges in extracting the oil.

The project aimed to create fuel from algae, specifically Chlorella Vulgaris, chosen for its ease of growth and high oil content. This algae sinks when 'ripe', simplifying extraction from its growth medium.
However, the Chlorella Vulgaris cells possess exceptionally tough walls, preventing the release of a significant amount of oil through standard methods. Only a small quantity was obtained via solvent extraction.
Due to the difficulty in rupturing the algae cells, the project shifted to using sunflowers as a feedstock. Sunflower seeds yield oil when subjected to pressure in an oil press.
The extracted sunflower oil was then processed through transesterification to produce biodiesel, a process that separates glycerine. Previous coverage has focused on algae cultivation for uses other than fuel.
