Community Canteen by Mountain Stream in China
A new community canteen, the Shan Canteen, has been designed by LLLab. architects within the Aranya Wuling Mountain resort community in Chengde, Hebei, China. It is situated beside a mountain stream, aiming to blend with its natural surroundings.

The canteen is located on a slope with water views to the west and a garden to the east. Its dark grey metal hip-and-gable roof is designed to sit low to the ground, reflecting the sky and integrating with the environment. Deep eaves extend around the building, creating an 'engawa' or semi-open space for visitors to enjoy the landscape and stream sounds.
Inside, horizontal windows frame the natural scenery. The building's eaves are angled to block summer sun and direct views towards the water. The dining area accommodates 108 people. A skylight covered with washi paper diffuses sunlight, creating a soft ambiance.
The interior features natural wood veneers on the ceilings and walls, contrasting with the outdoor environment. The design aims to provide a comfortable, home-like dining experience while keeping the mountain landscape prominent.
