Daniel Libeskind Wins 2026 Praemium Imperiale for Architecture

Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind has been named the architecture laureate for the 2026 Praemium Imperiale awards by the Japan Art Association.

Libeskind, who leads Studio Libeskind, was recognized for creating "emotionally resonant, innovative, and sustainable" architecture, often characterized by his deconstructionist style with sharp angles and geometric structures.

Notable projects include the Jewish Museum Berlin and the Bundeswehr Museum of Military History, as well as more recent works like the Maggie's Centre at the Royal Free in London.

The Japan Art Association also acknowledged Libeskind's significant contributions to architectural education and his influence on shaping cultural spaces through his discourse and built works.

He will receive an honorarium of 15 million yen (£70,000) for the award, which is presented annually by the Japan Art Association.
