AMOLED Choker: A Wearable Tech Project

A custom choker necklace, dubbed OpenChoker, featuring an AMOLED touchscreen and RGB LEDs, was a notable project at DEF CON, serving as an effective conversation starter.

The choker integrates a thin and light AMOLED touchscreen, flanked by RGB LED strips. A PCB behind the display houses an RP2350 microcontroller and a micro SD card slot, powered by an 18650 battery cell at the rear. The device displays dynamic animations with sparkling LEDs.

A significant design challenge involved interfacing with the AMOLED display, as no existing footprint or reference design was available. The creator's board design is shared for those wishing to use the same display.

Battery life proved sufficient, with a single 18650 cell powering the choker for 16 hours, maintaining a voltage of 3.7 V. This eliminates the need for a tethered battery pack.

The capacitive touchscreen exhibited poor responsiveness when isolated on the choker, despite functioning correctly when connected to a development computer. This issue may be relevant for similar wearable projects.

An unexpected problem occurred when glue used on wires melted their insulation, exposing copper, highlighting potential issues when working under tight deadlines.
