Mexico's Climate Budget Faces Scrutiny Over Fossil Fuel Funding

Mexico's proposed 2027 fiscal budget, presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum, has drawn criticism for its allocation of funds towards climate policies, with concerns raised about continued spending on fossil fuels and a lack of transparency.

The draft budget outlines national spending priorities, including climate policies. While some climate-related areas see increased funding, others are decreased, and some included projects lack clear environmental relevance.

This funding includes 2.5 million pesos ($145,000) for environmental certification of companies by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

An additional 11.4 billion pesos ($664 million) is designated for "strategic renewable energy projects."
