COSI Telescope Assembly Progresses

Engineers and managers at UC Berkeley are overseeing the assembly of the COSI (Compton Spectrometer and Imager) detector. This wide-field gamma-ray telescope is designed to investigate energetic cosmic events.

The COSI detector assembly was recently photographed being raised from a table. Protective coverings are visible on the top of the detector box, shielding flex circuits that transmit signals to readout electronics.

COSI's scientific objectives include studying the creation and destruction of matter and antimatter, as well as the terminal phases of stellar evolution within the Milky Way and further afield.

This mission is a collaborative effort involving multiple institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory, the University of California, San Diego, the Naval Research Laboratory, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Northrop Grumman, the Space Dynamics Laboratory, and the Italian Space Agency.
