Coreboot Achieves DRAM Initialization for Intel Bay Trail
The coreboot project has successfully enabled DRAM initialization for Intel Bay Trail System-on-Chips (SoCs), a significant step towards reducing reliance on proprietary binary blobs in the boot process.

This advancement, presented at the Open Source Firmware Conference, allows coreboot to manage memory initialization on the decade-old Bay Trail architecture, previously used in low-performance mobile devices.
Initializing DRAM is challenging as it requires memory to be available before it can be configured. Traditionally, this relied on undocumented, proprietary binary blobs from manufacturers.
The coreboot team utilized reverse engineering techniques, employing the SerialICE debugger and the Unicorn Engine CPU emulator to understand and replicate the necessary initialization steps.
