Festival of the Future Showcases Community and Sustainable Design Projects
The Festival of the Future 2026, hosted by Beyond the Box CIC at the Royal College of Art, is exhibiting innovative projects from London's architecture and design schools. The showcase highlights emerging talent and ideas addressing climate change, reuse, and community.

Projects on display include a former warehouse converted into community workshop and studio spaces, a public plaza on London's Isle of Dogs, and the transformation of a care home, sports hall, and nursery into a self-sustaining center for cows. These student works tackle themes of regenerative design, material reinvention, and community building.
One featured project, 'The Pepper Exchange,' proposes using waste heat from data centers to grow produce in high-tech greenhouses, integrating housing and a restaurant to reframe digital infrastructure as a civic resource.
Other projects explore concepts like 'impermanence' in architecture through mixed-use buildings designed for transformation, and 'Subsidence,' which mediates a symbiotic relationship between land, people, and sheep in unstable landscapes.
The exhibition also includes designs for public plazas that resist corporate development through scale and symbolism, and a project questioning the future of technological towns after the age of AI.
Further concepts delve into creating community learning and making spaces from neglected sites, repurposing industrial buildings with low-energy solutions, and transforming waste centers into participatory public spaces.
Alongside the exhibition, the festival offers workshops, talks, and portfolio clinics, aiming to open up the architecture and design professions to young people and promote equity by design.
