Color-Shifting Light Sculpture Suspends Above Orchestra
The Walt Disney Concert Hall hosted "RADIANCE," a light sculpture installation by Grimanesa Amorós, commissioned by the LA Philharmonic. The work accompanied Alexander Scriabin’s "Prometheus: The Poem of Fire."

The installation, inspired by Prometheus and the Incan deity Viracocha, uses fire as its subject, forming a pulsing spark above the orchestra. It frames light as a carrier of knowledge and transformation, extending Amorós's artistic focus on light to an architectural scale.
Measuring 60 × 35 × 5 feet, RADIANCE is made of reflective material and color-shifting LED tubing. Its illumination is controlled by a custom lighting sequence.
A key feature is the integration of the sculpture with the concert hall's existing house lighting. Amorós programmed both systems as a unified lighting environment, connecting the sculpture to the architecture and the performance.
The lighting sequence was precisely timed with the orchestra's performance, progressing through six synchronized moments. The sculpture, hall lighting, and performance evolved as a coordinated system.
