A significant gift from Barbara K. Ostrom has endowed the director position in perpetuity. Bourg noted the personal connection to Ostrom through their shared ROTC and military service backgrounds.

Bourg's tenure has focused on digital access, equitable scholarly publishing, and expanded support for data-intensive research. She has also guided the libraries in adapting to AI, co-chairing a working group on scholarly content and generative AI.

Promoting open scholarship has been a key initiative, leading to the establishment of the Center for Research on Equitable and Open Scholarship and influencing MIT's framework for publisher contracts, including the cancellation of an Elsevier journals contract.

Under Bourg's leadership, the libraries have undergone renovations and launched MIT Reads, a program fostering empathy and belonging. She previously worked at Stanford University Libraries and served as a U.S. Army officer.

Bourg holds board positions with the Center for Open Science, the Stanford Data Science Institute, and Annual Reviews. She also serves on national academies committees related to scientific records.
