OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra Tested for PCB Design Capabilities

OpenAI claims its GPT-6 Astra model can design complete circuit boards in KiCad from a schematic, but an independent test by EEBench suggests significant limitations remain.

A recent EEBench blog post evaluated OpenAI's assertion that GPT-6 Astra can generate a fully routed PCB from a schematic, a process that has historically been challenging for AI and often less efficient than manual design.

EEBench, an electrical engineering agent benchmark, tested GPT-6 Astra's ability to perform hardware engineering tasks. The model achieved a score of 69.3% (+/- 10%), comparable to Claude Opus 5, though GPT-6 Astra is noted to be faster and cheaper.

The benchmark is developed by the creators of Atopile, a system designed for AI-driven PCB creation in KiCad. Despite GPT-6 Astra's performance, the EEBench analysis indicates that AI is not yet ready to replace human hardware engineers, as professional PCB design requires extensive validation, edge case handling, and rigorous testing beyond automated routing.
