Building Reuse Dominates Scotland's Best Building Award Shortlist

Three projects focused on the imaginative reuse and restoration of existing buildings have been shortlisted for the 2026 RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award.

The Edinburgh Futures Institute, a former Victorian hospital converted by Bennetts Associates into teaching spaces for the University of Edinburgh, is a contender. The jury praised its preservation of the historic integrity while creating a modern, stimulating environment.

Also shortlisted is the Paisley Central Library by Collective Architecture, which transformed a dilapidated high street building into a community learning and connection space, demonstrating the revitalization of underused urban structures.

The third project is the Tarlair Outdoor Pool Pavilion in Aberdeenshire, restored by Studio Octopi. This Art Deco structure's sensitive revival for contemporary use was highlighted by the jury.

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) established the award in 2002. This year's shortlist emphasizes sustainable and inclusive design approaches through the reuse of historic buildings.

RIAS President Libby Heathcote noted that the projects address current discussions on community, collaboration, retrofit, and reuse in diverse contexts.

The winner will be announced on November 26th, following a live discussion with the shortlisted practices on October 8th. Last year's award went to the Burrell Collection museum restoration.
