Buenos Aires Architecture Biennial Celebrates 40 Years

The Buenos Aires International Architecture Biennial marks its 40th anniversary with a free, five-week program from September 22 to October, focusing on the theme "HABITAR" (Inhabit).

The event will feature approximately 100 architecture firms, 15 exhibitions, 50 conferences, and 40 international guests from over 55 cities. Founded in 1985, the Biennial serves as a platform for architects, designers, urban planners, and enthusiasts to share perspectives on spatial analysis and production.

The theme "HABITAR" explores diverse ways of practicing architecture and reflects on humanity's relationship with the planet, cities, territories, and communities through projects from various global contexts.

The Central Exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes will showcase work from over 100 firms. Complementary exhibitions include "Habitar lo Extremo" (Inhabiting the Extreme) focusing on Antarctica, and "Habitar la Naturaleza" (Inhabiting Nature).

Further exhibitions will be held at the Centro Cultural Recoleta, featuring the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards 2026, and installations from an open call by the Institut Français d'Argentine.

Additional programming in the Recoleta neighborhood includes exhibitions on César Pelli and Diana Balmori, early 20th-century modernity in architecture, and the future of wood in inhabiting, alongside international contributions.

The International Forum, from October 5-10, will host over 50 free conferences with Chilean architect Smiljan Radić. The event will conclude with awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award for Marta Minujín, and prizes for projects, firms, and architectural elements.
