Billy Easter's Gel Lamp changes color with silicone slides

Designer Billy Easter has launched the Gel Lamp, a cubic silicone lamp that allows users to change its light color by inserting translucent silicone slides.

The lamp features a hollow silicone cube with a dimmable LED in its base. A slot allows for the insertion of 13 different colored silicone gel slides, inspired by photographic lighting gels, to alter the light's hue.

Easter developed the lamp and slides using a hand-cast silicone process. The LED is housed in a separate void for easy access and replacement, extending the lamp's lifespan.

The designer highlighted the lamp's tactile interaction, where the physical act of choosing and inserting a slide creates a more deliberate atmosphere adjustment compared to digital controls.

Beyond its lighting function, Easter intended the Gel Lamp to be a sculptural object even when unlit. The silicone material makes it durable and easy to clean for everyday use.

The lamp is envisioned for both residential and hospitality settings to add warmth and visual interest. It is produced in individually-numbered, limited batches.

The Gel Lamp costs £375 and includes one lamp and two colored slides. Easter's studio, Public Parts, specializes in hand-cast silicone homeware and personal items.
