BIG's Macondo Park Opens for Shakira's Madrid Residency

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has designed Macondo Park, a temporary cultural landscape in Madrid, to accompany Shakira's concert residency. The park surrounds the concert venue, offering public spaces inspired by Gabriel García Márquez's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'.

The 185,000-square-meter park features a central plaza and twelve thematic pavilions, connected by color-coded routes. It hosts daily cultural programming including music, dance, art, and gastronomy throughout Shakira's 12-show residency, which runs until October 11. Over 500 trees are planted to create shaded gathering areas.

Temporary structures were assembled in about 10 days using lightweight fabric, modular scaffolding, and reusable components. This approach combines a shared structural system with distinct designs for each pavilion, accommodating various cultural activities for the residency's duration.

The project was designed for dismantling and reuse. After the concerts, temporary buildings and landscape elements will be taken apart, with materials intended for repurposing. The trees will also be returned to local nurseries, extending the temporary landscape strategy beyond the event.
