Marcel Breuer Furniture Reimagined in Masur Birch for London Design Festival

Design gallery Béton Brut and manufacturer Isokon have collaborated to reinterpret Marcel Breuer's iconic 1930s plywood furniture designs, launching the "Masur Edition" at London Design Festival.

The collection celebrates the 90th anniversary of Breuer's original Isokon designs and will be displayed at Béton Brut's east London showroom. The Masur Edition reimagines four classic Breuer pieces – the Cut-Out Armchair, Cut-Out Chair, Isokon Nesting Tables, and Isokon Dining Table – all designed in 1936.

While Breuer's original furniture was made from plywood, it also featured other wood finishes. This new collection challenges the notion that these pieces were exclusively plywood and intended to be unadorned, showcasing their capacity for material variation.

The Masur Edition uses decoratively patterned masur birch, a rare wood from Northern Europe known for its distinctive swirls and knots. This material adds a unique graphic character and a "psychedelic quality" to Breuer's precise modernist forms, creating a striking contrast.

This limited-edition launch will be sold exclusively through Béton Brut on a made-to-order basis, with prices starting at £1,300. The lead time for orders is approximately 10 to 12 weeks due to the scarcity and difficulty in sourcing masur veneer in high volumes.

Béton Brut's founder, Sophie Pearce, expressed the responsibility and excitement of working with such iconic pieces, aiming to showcase them in a new way while remaining faithful to the gallery's ethos of presenting exclusive works. The collaboration builds on Béton Brut's history of selling early Isokon pieces.
