Astronomers May Have Found the First Miniature Blazar Pointed at Earth
Researchers report the potential discovery of a microblazar within our Milky Way galaxy, a scaled-down version of supermassive black holes that emit powerful jets.

Blazars are quasars with one of their jets pointed towards Earth. Microblazars are smaller versions, thought to consist of a small black hole consuming a star and spewing material into space. These objects are of interest because their faster processes allow scientists to observe cosmic events in "fast-forward."
Astronomers have searched for microblazars in the Milky Way for decades, but previous candidates were found to be full-sized, distant blazars. A team led by Pedro Luque-Escamilla and Josep Martí re-examined archival data, identifying an object cataloged as IRAS 18293−0941.
Cross-referencing with modern radio telescope data revealed a small, bright emission with light from one side, characteristic of blazars. Further investigation using data from multiple observatories confirmed the object's location within our galaxy.
The multi-wavelength approach used in this study is considered more convincing than previous microblazar candidate claims. The object's proximity to a region of ultrahigh-energy particles is also noted.
Researchers propose that the microblazar's jet, when it impacts a cloud of matter away from Earth, acts as a massive particle accelerator, explaining the origin of these high-energy particles. Additional observations are planned to study this proposed "hotspot."
