DIY Jet Turbine Assembly and Testing Underway

A YouTube creator has reached the assembly and testing phase for a self-built jet turbine after months of work. The project highlights the challenges of precision engineering for high-performance machinery.

The turbine's construction involves specialized parts, including a carefully balanced rotor, though the outer casing utilizes repurposed materials like a commercial gas cylinder and a steel drinking bottle. Strict tolerances are crucial throughout the assembly process due to the extreme operating conditions.

The starting mechanism presented initial difficulties. After assembly, an RPM sensor circuit and an electrical starter were added to allow the turbine to spin up before ignition. Early tests of the starter revealed issues with the motor and clutch, necessitating upgrades.

Before the first ignition, the entire turbine requires dynamic balancing. A new, more advanced balancing rig is being designed and assembled for this purpose, which will delay the initial startup but ensures a safer and more controlled process.
