Butterflies Relocating Globally Due to Climate Change and Habitat Loss
A comprehensive study reveals that approximately 1 in 10 of the world's butterfly species are changing their locations, with climate change and habitat disturbance identified as primary drivers. The study, which incorporated research in multiple languages and insights from 68 butterfly experts worldwide, found that butterfly species are shifting their ranges on every continent. Lead author Shawan Chowdhury noted the astonishing scale of these movements, emphasizing that previous research had underestimated global patterns, particularly in the tropics where most insect species reside.
Of the 1,758 species documented to have altered their locations, 80% expanded their ranges, with these expansions concentrated in tropical regions. Conversely, nearly 30% of species experienced range contractions, a phenomenon primarily observed in Europe and North America. Additionally, 22% of species moved to different elevations, often a response to rising temperatures.
Climate change was identified as a major driver in 79% of cases where the cause of movement was determined. Habitat disturbance and agriculture were most frequently cited as reasons for shrinking butterfly ranges.
The authors stress the need for conservation efforts to aid butterflies, including protecting hospitable areas, reducing agricultural impacts, preserving habitat connectivity, and forecasting species movements for land protection.
