Artemis II Crew Notes Moon Impact Flashes

The Artemis II crew observed and documented faint flashes on the Moon caused by small rocky fragments impacting its surface. These observations were made during their mission from April 1-10, 2026.

Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen noted the locations of five "pinprick" bursts of light from the Orion spacecraft, which was 46,000 miles from the Moon. These flashes are visual evidence of micrometeoroid impacts on the lunar surface.

The full lunar science dataset from the Artemis II mission, including imagery and crew audio observations, is now available for public and scientific study.
