Apple Unveils First Foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo

Apple has entered the foldable phone market with the release of its first-ever folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo. This device marks a significant shift in iPhone design since its initial touchscreen release in 2007.

The iPhone Duo features a central hinge and an external screen, allowing it to be used when folded. When closed, it is comparable in size to a passport, measuring 5.4 inches long with an aspect ratio similar to the iPhone 18 Pro. Unfolded, the device boasts the largest iPhone display ever at 7.6 inches.

Constructed with a titanium enclosure and "ceramic shields," the iPhone Duo's inner screen is protected by scratch-resistant glass and can be used while the phone is partially open. This semi-open state allows for laptop-like usage or holding it like a book, facilitated by a hinge with over 100 components.

The phone includes dual speakers and both internal and external screens share the same aspect ratio. It is equipped with two external cameras featuring upgraded aperture capabilities. Apple also introduced custom cases, including one with a built-in kickstand.

Apple CEO John Ternus described the foldable phone as the optimal way to position the iPhone as an "intelligent personal hub," capable of displaying two windows simultaneously on its unfolded screen.

The release follows similar foldable devices from competitors like Samsung's Galaxy Fold (2019) and Honor's ultra-thin folding phone from last year. Apple also announced updates to its iPhone 18 and Apple Watch lines, along with improvements to its cooling systems using recycled materials.
