Apparatus Unveils Mythological Collection

Design studio Apparatus has launched Act V: Afsaneh, its first full collection in five years, drawing inspiration from Persian mythology and personal history.

The collection features lighting and furniture, including pendants, chandeliers, sconces, and tables, crafted from materials like bronze, brass, and glass. The name 'Afsaneh' translates to 'fable' and is linked to the founder's mother, grounding the collection in personal narrative.

Central to the lighting elements is blown glass, symbolizing cycles of life, creation, and knowledge. The sconces, named 'Esfand' (seed), incorporate blown glass within lacquered settings in various colors. These lacquered elements also appear as standalone table vessels.

The pendant lights, called 'Gol' (flower), feature large fiberglass domes enclosing smaller glass orbs, with polished aluminum finishes. This represents the progression from seed to flower within the collection's narrative.

The 'Rahvi' (serpent) modular chandelier culminates the collection, symbolizing the accumulation of knowledge through its figurative brass body and glass orbs. It is highly customizable, with options for size and the addition of precious stone rings.

Apparatus combined traditional materials with modern techniques. The collection includes a custom incense and collaborations with Martha Graham Dance Company for accompanying short films.

Act V marks a shift towards more narrative forms for Apparatus, following renovations of its Los Angeles space and the opening of a London location.
