Arson Investigation Launched After Statue Vandalized

Police are investigating a suspected arson attack that destroyed a newly installed statue of President Benjamin Harrison at his presidential site in Indianapolis. The fire, reported early on September 27, completely consumed the 5-foot-6 statue, leaving only its internal structure.

The statue, made of fire-resistant polymer, was installed less than two weeks prior as part of a public art initiative. Officials believe the material would not have combusted on its own, indicating deliberate ignition.

The artwork was a collaboration between the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site and the Herron School of Art + Design, with students and faculty spending over 1,200 hours 3D-printing it. It was valued at $8,500.

The presidential site planned to display the statue for a year and then replace it with other student-designed artworks. The initiative aimed to use historical artifacts and 3D technology to engage the community with history.

The site has launched a crowdfunding campaign to replace the destroyed statue, seeking funds to reprint the original and potentially cast a bronze version. They also aim to use more durable materials for future installations.
