AUD Students Rethink Urban Furniture for Humans and Animals

Students at the American University in Dubai have developed innovative public furniture designs that consider the needs of both humans and urban wildlife.

The "Urban Pod" initiative, involving over 110 student proposals across 10 courses, challenged students to create designs integrating human needs with those of animals and the urban ecosystem.

Projects include "Rest and Nest Pod," a biophilic structure with solar panels offering shelter and feeding for birds. "Crowtopia" features a puzzle-based feeding system for crows above human seating.

"Ṭuma'nīnah" uses stacked clay pot forms for shade and incorporates pockets for planting, water, and bird feeding. "Pawse" integrates human seating with dog feeding and resting systems.

"Drift Pod" is a modular system for people and cats, with seating and integrated feeding/water features. "Spike" offers a cocoon-like interior for humans and a shaded micro-habitat for cats.

"Roller's Rest" is inspired by the Indian Roller bird, creating a sculptural space with integrated feeding and water for birds. "Tree of Co-Existence" has a canopy with feeders for birds and alcoves for cats.

"Wingfold" translates a pigeon's wing into seating with a canopy for shade and shelter. "The Purch Pod" provides seating, shade, and sheltered spaces for cats and birds, inspired by UAE dunes.
