AI Companion Robots Aim to Fill Human Connection Gaps
A new generation of AI companion robots is emerging, designed not just for utility but to foster emotional connection and combat loneliness. Unlike earlier models limited by basic voice commands and novelty, these advanced robots are engineered for proactive interaction, emotional awareness, and integration into connected ecosystems.

Early companion robots, appearing around 2017, offered personality and basic interaction but often became unused once their novelty faded, especially when server support ceased. The current wave of AI robots, described as having "gentle intelligence," focuses on creating a sense of presence rather than just task completion.
Loneliness is a significant issue affecting elderly adults, children with migrant parents, and urban professionals.
