Monterrey's Centennial Ahuehuete Tree

A Montezuma cypress, known as the Centennial Ahuehuete, was gifted to Monterrey, Mexico, in 1996 to commemorate the city's 400th anniversary.

The city of Monterrey was founded on September 20, 1596, by Spanish colonist Don Diego de Montemayor. It was named in honor of the Count of Monterrey, Gaspar de Zúñiga y Acevedo, Viceroy of Mexico. Monterrey is now the capital of the Mexican state of Nuevo León and the center of the country's second-most populated metropolitan area.

The city's 400th anniversary in 1996 was marked by various events, including the creation of a time capsule to be opened in 2046. The Centennial Ahuehuete tree is another lasting legacy from this celebration.

The Ahuehuete, a specimen of Taxodium mucronatum (also known as Montezuma cypress or sabino), was donated to the city in January 1996 by Carlos Alanís Von Der Meden and his family. Alanís, formerly CEO of Grupo Vivero Imperial, a major urban tree grower, and president of the Mexican Arboriculture Society, gifted Mexico's national tree for the significant occasion.
