Sea Turtle Nesting Recorded on US West Coast for First Time

For the first time in recorded history, a sea turtle has nested on the U.S. West Coast. Olive ridley turtles, the smallest sea turtle species, were observed laying eggs in Southern California.

The initial nesting event occurred near Seal Beach on September 16th. Three days later, a second nesting was documented near the Huntington Beach Pier in Orange County, possibly by the same turtle. Both locations have been secured.

Olive ridley turtles are found globally but primarily inhabit tropical waters. Adults typically weigh up to 100 pounds. Incubation of the eggs is expected to take between 45 to 60 days.

Lifeguards initially mistook the nesting turtle for one in distress due to the rarity of such sightings on the West Coast. The discovery has generated excitement and hope for the survival of the eggs amidst potential environmental challenges like tides and storms.
