Restored Sony Trinitron TV Works After Six Years as Roadside Debris

A salvaged Sony Trinitron CRT television, which had been exposed to the elements for at least six years, has been successfully repaired and is now functional.

The restoration project involved cleaning the TV and addressing issues with its power supply, which initially prevented it from powering on. Despite its prolonged exposure, the internal components were found to be remarkably intact.

The repair process required replacing several components, primarily capacitors on the power supply board and parts on the neck board connected to the CRT. A few MOSFETs were also replaced after testing open.

With the new components installed, the TV powered on successfully. When connected to a Wii console, it displayed games like Persona 4 with good picture quality.

Modern CRT TVs offer a service menu accessible via the remote, allowing for adjustments to picture alignment and other settings without manual potentiometer adjustments.

While further work may be needed on other circuit board components and the speaker, the successful restoration demonstrates that CRT TVs can often be repaired if the picture tube remains intact.
