New Housing Program for Homeless College Students Opens in Denver

Depaul USA has opened its first student residence in Denver, the Dax Program, offering housing to college students experiencing homelessness. This initiative aims to provide a stable environment, allowing students to focus on their education.

The Dax Program, which offers students up to two years of housing, has partnered with MSU Denver and Regis University. The program, started in 2015, has housed 494 students across its 11 locations nationwide.

Nationwide, a survey found about half of students experience housing insecurity, with 14% being homeless. Local universities report assisting many students annually, though some resources are insufficient.

University support services help students with aid applications and housing assistance. However, some students may not qualify or find the help lasts long enough. Many students experiencing homelessness live in their cars.

The Dax Program aims for a respectful transition to independence. One student shared how her own space in a previous Dax program helped her focus on studies and personal growth, leading to securing her own apartment.
