Modular Macro Keypad Uses Audio Jacks

A new modular macro keypad, called the suutari20, simplifies custom keyboard building by using common 3.5 mm audio jacks.

The ATmega32U4 microcontroller's integrated USB controller previously simplified custom keyboard development. This trend continues with newer microcontrollers, but the suutari20 further enhances simplicity and reduces costs.

The keypad utilizes 3.5 mm audio jacks, with each jack supporting up to three keys, allowing for a total of 18 keys on the hub. It can also accommodate analog devices like volume knobs.

Powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico's RP2040 microcontroller and using QMK firmware, it is accessible for those familiar with custom keyboard programming. A 3D-printed case and the audio hardware are the main components needed.

This design emphasizes extreme simplicity and cost-effectiveness, featuring modular keys each with their own microcontroller.
