AI Surpasses Human Mathematician on Twin Prime Conjecture Record

A human mathematician recently set a new record for the small prime-gap bound, a step towards solving the twin prime conjecture, but was quickly surpassed by AI systems.

Julia Stadlmann set a new record for the twin prime conjecture, a famous problem in number theory. This was the first advance in over a decade.

Within days, AI startup Axiom Math improved Stadlmann's work. OpenAI's AI then surpassed both records shortly after.

This rapid AI advancement has concerned mathematicians about its impact on research and understanding.

The twin prime conjecture posits infinite pairs of primes are two numbers apart. A related problem, proving infinite pairs of primes share any constant gap, was solved in 2013 with a bound under 70 million.

Mathematicians have worked to lower this bound. By 2014, it was 246, a record that stood for twelve years until Stadlmann's work.

Stadlmann lowered the record to 240. After she published, Axiom Math improved it to 212. OpenAI's AI then achieved a bound of 186.

While AI is a useful tool, its progress raises questions about accessibility and the value of human understanding versus AI-driven benchmarks.
