Linux Handheld Built From 4G Hotspot

A new project repurposes a cheap 4G wireless hotspot into a Linux handheld computer, offering a budget-friendly alternative to devices like the Raspberry Pi.

The build utilizes a $20 4G hotspot (model MF800) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, which is supported by mainstream Linux. This processor was common in budget smartphones around 2010.

The project integrates an iPhone USB keyboard case accessory and an Adafruit Sharp SPI memory display, replacing the hotspot's original small display. Modifications include case and PCB adjustments, fitting the keyboard, and creating a custom power board.

Software setup is a key challenge, requiring significant hacking to get the display operational, rather than a simple distribution installation. This approach highlights creative reuse of unexpected hardware, reminiscent of early Linux projects on old routers.
