40 Filmmakers in 25 Countries Collaborate on Nature Film Using Super 8 Cameras

A new project titled "Super Nature" brings together 40 filmmakers from 25 countries to create a collective tribute to the planet, shot entirely on Super 8 cameras. The initiative, led by Ed Sayers, founder of the straight 8 competition, aims to capture intimate moments and thoughts from people and creatures in their home environments, subverting traditional documentary approaches.

The Super 8 format, introduced by Kodak in 1965, is known for its grainy, nostalgic aesthetic and is favored by filmmakers drawn to analog methods. Sayers utilized the format's democratizing legacy for "Super Nature," sending cameras to participants, many of whom were new to Super 8, and providing instruction via video calls.

Collaborators include photographers Gideon Mendel and Ami Vitale, as well as communities like the Enawene Nawe tribe in Brazil. Greenpeace also connected Sayers with individuals in their network. The challenge lay in creating a cohesive film from disparate segments, with Sayers emphasizing that the ensemble of stories should be greater than the sum of their parts.

The film features cinematic shots of nature alongside glimpses of the filmmakers and narration, fostering a sense of vulnerability and connection. Eleven languages and numerous accents are present, highlighting the rootedness of each contributor. Sayers notes that Super 8's limitations—short roll lengths and cost—encourage planning, intention, and careful observation, contrasting with the immediacy of digital technology.
