3D Printable Lenticular Indicators

MIT CSAIL has developed a novel lenticular printing technique that allows for dynamic visual indicators to be 3D printed.

The ShiftLens concept involves printing a transparent lens layer over a patterned layer of alternating colors. An actuation mechanism, such as a knob or switch, shifts the lens layer relative to the pattern layer, creating a changing color effect.

A practical application demonstrated is an indicator on a bottle that shows whether the container is properly closed.

Currently, there is no publicly available design tool for these prints, although the research team created one for internal use with Rhino.

This innovation represents an interesting application of 3D printing technology.
