NASA's "Dream with Us" Challenge Focuses on New Aviation Fuels

NASA's 2026-2027 "Dream with Us" Design Challenge invites middle and high school students to explore new energy systems for aircraft, with a specific focus on incorporating liquefied natural gas (LNG) into aviation.

The challenge aims to address the growing need for safer, more affordable, and sustainable aviation by investigating new fuel sources and their impact on aircraft and airport infrastructure. Middle school teams will design an airport that accommodates both LNG and traditional aviation fuel, considering elements like fuel locations, terminals, and runways.

The competition is open to U.S. students in grades 6-8 for the middle school division. Submissions are due by January 22, 2027, and must be the original work of the students, with no use of AI tools permitted.

Entries will be judged on impact, practicality, originality, and communication. Both technical and creative components are required, including an airport layout explanation and an advertisement promoting the modified airport's benefits.

Participants must submit their work through the NASA Gateway link, including signed permission forms and presentations in PDF format. Videos must be uploaded to YouTube with a shareable link. Accessibility standards, such as alt tags for images, are also required.

NASA provides several educational resources and activities to help students learn about aircraft and airport design. Information on LNG as an aviation fuel source is also available for research.
