2,977 Lights Recreate Twin Towers Over New York Harbor

A public art installation, "2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor," was unveiled on September 9, 2026, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The artwork uses individual lights to represent each life lost.

The installation features 2,977 lights forming the architectural scale of the Twin Towers. Developed with victims' families, survivors, and first responders, each light symbolizes one person who died on September 11, 2001.

The lights form a helix that ascends before locking into the towers' geometry, shifting focus from beams to individual points, creating a collective portrait.

The geometry references the unrealized THINK team's World Cultural Center proposal for Ground Zero, bringing a trace of its skeletal concept back into the air.

Creative direction was by Addison Mehr, design by Yan Paul Dubbelman, with advice from Studio Drift, Shigeru Ban, and Dean Maltz. Community members also contributed.

Recorded music by Glass, Adams, and Richter accompanies the display. Sky Elements Drone Shows handled aerial production, and IDEKO managed permitting and safety.

The project is funded by private philanthropy. The precise number of lights acknowledges individual loss within collective memory.

The artwork uses technology in a slowed-down manner, existing only in the night sky as 2,977 lights briefly form the buildings before returning to individual points.
