Twin Towers Recreated with Drones for 9/11 Anniversary

An art installation used 2,977 drones to recreate the Twin Towers in New York Harbor, with each light symbolizing a life lost in the 9/11 attack.

The "Lights Over New York Harbor" installation, on September 9, featured drones outlining the Twin Towers at their full architectural scale. Design studio Drift and architect Shigeru Ban collaborated on the project, with each drone's light representing one of the 2,977 lives lost at the World Trade Center.

The installation was illuminated twice for fifteen minutes each, hovering over the harbor before returning to their landing spots. The project aimed to serve as a futuristic remembrance tool, using technology to ensure the past is not forgotten.

The design team consulted with family members, survivors, and emergency responders. The installation also referenced unbuilt proposals for the World Trade Center site, including a "helix" formation representing Think's World Cultural Centre master plan, on which Ban collaborated.
