South Sudan Parks Gain World Heritage Status for Avian Spectacle

South Sudan's Boma and Badingilo national parks are set to receive World Heritage status, recognizing their critical role as a haven for migratory birds.

Each year around April, the onset of rains in South Sudan triggers a significant avian event in Boma and Badingilo national parks. Large flocks of storks, including African openbills and Abdim’s storks, congregate in the skies, creating a remarkable spectacle.

Conservation manager Megan Claase described the phenomenon, noting that the birds are attracted by abundant food sources that emerge after the first rains, such as winged alates from termite mounds and snails in the newly formed wetlands.

These parks and their surrounding areas form a vast, interconnected ecosystem of wetlands, swamps, woodlands, and plains, representing Africa's largest intact savanna system. This landscape is vital for migratory species, providing a productive environment for a wide variety of birds.
