New Snake Species Named After Guns N' Roses Guitarist Slash

A newly identified species of groundsnake from New Guinea has been named Lielaphis slashi, honoring Slash, the lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses, for his advocacy of reptiles and related institutions.

The reddish-brown snake, found in the forests of Papua New Guinea, is the twentieth species confirmed within the Lielaphis genus. The naming acknowledges musician Saul Hudson's (Slash) lifelong support for snakes, zoos, and museums.

Slash expressed his honor and excitement about the species being named after him. The snake features an unpatterned reddish-brown back and a plain white or cream underside.

The discovery was made by Christopher Austin, a professor and curator at Louisiana State University, in a secondary forest in Papua New Guinea's Sandaun Province in July 2006. Austin noted the difficulty in finding nocturnal snakes, especially given the presence of venomous species in the region.
