Henry Wessel Photography Exhibition Opens at The Grolier Club

An exhibition of over 65 prints by photographer Henry Wessel (1942-2018) is now open at The Grolier Club in New York. Titled "Henry Wessel — Photographs and Books," the show features his black-and-white compositions that explore landscape and documentary imagery.

Wessel, a New Jersey native who later taught at the San Francisco Art Institute, became known for his work capturing the Bay Area's light, neighborhoods, and people. The exhibition includes his complete "Incidents" and "Traffic" series, alongside works from "Real Estate" and "Night Walks."

For his "Night Walks" series, Wessel photographed local homes in the early morning or after dinner. In "Traffic," he captured candid moments from his car, learning to shoot directly from the driver's seat to better translate his immediate experiences.

Wessel believed in preparing oneself to "receive good luck" as part of the photographic process. The exhibition showcases early works from 1968 and pieces created throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The show runs through November 14. A catalogue is scheduled for release in October and is available for pre-order.
